Professional experience
Dr English joined the CSES as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow. He was previously Assistant Professor in the Department of Geography and Resource Management at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. From 2001 to 2006, he was lecturer/tutor at the University of Melbourne (Geography and Environmental Studies) in 'Environmental Politics and Management’, ‘Project Management’, ‘Famine’, ‘Australia and Asia’, ‘China in Transition’ and ‘Chinese Politics and Society’. His thesis was completed in 2006 titled 'Greening the Chinese State: Reforming Institutions, Coordinating Tiao-Kuai Relations and Managing Nature Reserves'.

His research interests include: China in transition, environmental governance, and sustainable development and climate change.

He is currently co-investigator of a project funded by the Department of Climate Change on sustainable energy use in China. Previous research involvement includes:
