TITLE: Economic Development in Indonesia and Vietnam: A Personal
Experience
PRESENTER: David Ray, SENADA Project (USAID), Jakarta Indonesia
Since 2000 David has worked on a number of development projects
promoting economic reform in Indonesia and Vietnam. Over the 2000 to
2003 period he was an economic advisor at the Indonesian Ministry of
Industry and Trade and worked on range of issues impacting the business
enabling environment, including decentralisation, competition policy,
trade policy, local government regulations and port sector reform. From
late 2003 until the end of 2006, he was based in Hanoi and led The Asia
Foundation component of the Vietnam Competitiveness Initiative, focusing
on provincial economic governance reform. Currently he is the Deputy
Director of the SENADA Competitiveness project in Jakarta, a project to
enhance the competitiveness of key labour intensive manufacturing
sectors. David holds a PhD in Economics from Victoria University
(completed at CSES) and an honours degree in economics from Murdoch
University.

Trade PRESENTERS: Vietnam Institute of Trade Delegation
A delegation
from the Vietnam Institute of Trade (VIT)from the Ministry of Trade,
Vietnam, visited the CSES and presented material on ASEAN+3 free trade
agreements. The visitors were invited by Prof. Tran Van Hoa whom is
carrying out joint research with VIT, funded by an ARC Linkage Grant.

PRESENTER: Prof. Peter Sheehan, Director, CSES
Peter Sheehan is Director of the Centre for Strategic
Economic Studies at Victoria University. He leads the Centre's work on
climate change and is publishing actively in this area, especially in
relation to the implications of continued rapid growth in China, India
and other developing countries.

Welfare System
PRESENTER: Prof. R.G. Gregory, Economics Program, RSSS, Australian
National University
Bob Gregory is Professor in the Economics Program,
Research School of Social Sciences, ANU. He has been a leading
Australian researcher on economic and social issues, including the
interaction of the welfare system and the labour market, for three
decades.
