Emerging China: Internal Challenges and Global Implications
13-14 July 2006
Victoria University Conference Centre
Level 12, 300 Flinders St, Melbourne
Jointly organised by the Centre for Strategic
Economic Studies (CSES) at Victoria University (Melbourne) and the
Association for
Chinese Economic Studies (Australia) (ACESA).
This was also the 18th Annual Meeting of the Association for Chinese
Economic Studies (Australia) – ACESA2006.
China has emerged as a dominant force in world economic and political
affairs in the early years of the 21st century. The impact of a surging
China is strongly felt in energy, resource and financial markets, in
trade and the re-distribution of manufacturing industry worldwide and in
regional and global geopolitics.
This impact, and the issues that it raises, is particularly important
for Australia. Our current economic prosperity is heavily reliant on
China’s demand for energy and resources, even though imports from China
continue to erode Australia’s manufacturing capability, and Australia
seeks to build an alliance with China on issues ranging from trade and
terrorism to climate change.
This meeting, the 2006 conference of the Association for Chinese
Economic Studies (Australia), addressed both the internal challenges
faced by the Chinese Government in ensuring sustainable growth and
delivering the benefits of that growth to ordinary citizens, and the
global implications of China’s emergence.
Many issues were discussed, including the nature and sustainability
of China’s current growth path, the future of financial reform, the
implications of continuing growth for energy markets and the climate,
inequality and the distribution of income within China, including
regional imbalances, the challenges facing the government sector and the
implications of China’s emergence as a leading knowledge nation.
A range of leading experts, both from China and Australia, participated in the conference, which provided an opportunity for
full and frank exchange about these important issues.
The Program, papers and presentations page provides
